Some 20 people were killed and 79 others wounded in a fuel tank explosion in the Akkar region in northern Lebanon, the Lebanese Red Cross said in a statement on Sunday.

A security source told Petra’s reporter in Beirut that the explosion occurred at 2:00 am this morning, leaving dozens of people injured and they were taken to hospitals, noting that “there are a number of missing people who were thrown by the blast.”

The source added that “the cause of the explosion was not clear, waiting for the findings of an investigation and hearing the testimonies of the injured, most of whom were gathered nearby at the time of the explosion.”
