The Cabinet on Wednesday appointed Adel Sharkas, a longtime Central Bank of Jordan (CBJ) official, as the new governor of the bank succeeding Zyad Fareez.

Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh thanked the outgoing CBJ governor for his service and role in “cementing the Kingdom’s monetary stability and reforms at critical economic circumstances”.

Sharkas, who holds a Ph.D. in Financial Economics, University of New Orleans, USA 2002, began working at the Central Bank of Jordan in 1991 as an economic researcher, according to his CV published on the CBJ website.

After a 4-year academic tenure in US universities, Sharkas returned to the CBJ again in 2006 to occupy the position of Head of the Monetary Affairs Section in the Research Department until he was appointed in 2012 as Deputy Governor of the Bank, a position he held since then until he was appointed today as Governor of the Bank.
