His Majesty King Abdullah II met in New York on Tuesday with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for a discussion focusing on the need to intensify international efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace between the Palestinians and Israelis.

King Abdullah underlined the need to launch serious and effective Palestinian-Israeli negotiations on the basis of the two-state solution, the Arab Peace Initiative and international legitimacy resolutions, leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on pre-June 4, 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The discussion also touched on challenges facing the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). In this context, His Majesty emphasized the importance of supporting the UN agency to continue to provide relief, education and health services to more than five million Palestinian refugees registered with the UN.

The meeting tackled burdens borne by Jordan as a result of the Syrian refugee crisis, given the Kingdom’s limited resources. The talks underscored the importance of the international community shouldering its responsibilities towards host countries, especially Jordan, to enable them to continue providing relief and humanitarian services to the refugees.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs, the Advisor to His Majesty the King, the Director of His Majesty’s Office, and the Permanent Representative of Jordan to the United Nations.
