HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan on Tuesday opened meetings of the 10th Mediterranean Women Entrepreneurs Forum in Amman.

The meeting is co-organized by ASCAME (Association of Mediterranean Chambers of Commerce and Industry), AFAEMME (Association of Organisations of Mediterranean Businesswomen) and JFBPW (Jordan Forum Business and Professional Women). Also, with the support of the Chamber of Commerce of Amman and the Chamber of Commerce of Barcelona.

The two-day event, which is held at the Amman Chamber of Commerce, will offer the opportunity to women in technology to take the center stage in order to address key opportunities and pressing issues in the Mediterranean region. Particularly, it will focus on influencing future perspectives and planning actions in the STEM sector (Science, Technology, Economics and Mathematics).

During the opening session, Princess Sumaya delivered a speech in which she underlined the importance of the gathering. The Princess said that when given the opportunity, women in our region have proven themselves, again and again, to be innovative and creative, resourceful and driven. Events such as this help to build confidence, to celebrate success, and to devise better strategies to achieve incredible outcomes for women entrepreneurs and, ultimately, for society as a whole.

The Princess added that technology is indeed a natural partner for empowerment and a wonderful discipline for knowledge-sharing. Indeed, STEM from education to entrepreneurship, provides a potential gateway to independent success for talented women throughout the Mediterranean. For, the entire tech sector represents the sort of ‘Smart Power’ that all our nations need to break down barriers, to support development and to nurture real talent.

For his part, Chairman of the Amman Chamber of Commerce Senator Issa Murad said that “we all realize that when women make progress, countries make progress. Women’s economic empowerment is critical to driving economic growth. Today, there is a lot of data from the UN, the World Bank, corporations and think tanks that show investments in women correlate positively with poverty alleviation and a country’s general prosperity and even decreases in corruption. We also know that women-run small and medium size businesses are accelerators of GDP. They are engines for economic growth”.

He added that “this forum holds promise in way of women entrepreneurs. Where the prosperity of countries and their social soundness are inextricably linked to the economic and educational status of the women in these societies. Therefore, the discussions over these two days will, I hope, provide insights on the ways forward for all women in Mediterranean countries and be transformed into tangible acts that will have a profound and positive impact on our countries”.
