Thai Ambassador to Jordan, Pornpong Kanittanon, called for opening a Jordanian embassy in Bangkok as bilateral relations currently grow in various fields and that a diplomatic mission could take a key role to further boost cooperation.

In a statement to Petra, Kanittanon said Jordanian-Thai ties, which began 60 years ago, are “strong and unique,” pointing to His Majesty King Abdullah’s multiple visits to Thailand, which reflect a genuine desire to enhance relations.

He pointed out that there are 500 Thai students majoring in various fields in Jordan, adding that they enroll in Jordanian universities because of their high reputation.

On trade and economic cooperation, the envoy said that the $200 million trade volume between the two countries falls short of the desired goals, and that both sides are making efforts to boost economic cooperation.

He said that he is encouraging Thai businessmen to invest in Jordan, which has a unique location, despite regional instability, which is of major concern to investors.

Kanittanon spoke about the Thailand International Cooperation Agency’s (TICA) role in exchanging technical expertise, including an annual training program in Thailand for Jordanians in various fields in cooperation with the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation.

He expressed his appreciation for King Abdullah’s internationally-recognized efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region, noting that Bangkok supports a two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
