The American Chamber of Commerce in Jordan (AmCham-JO) on Wednesday celebrated the 20 year anniversary of signing the Jordan-United States Free Trade Agreement, and establishing the Chamber.

In remarks at the ceremony, Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply, Tariq Hammouri, expressed his pride in the Jordanian-American partnership in the economic fields, which culminated in the signing of the free trade agreement that positively reflected on the Kingdom’s exports to the American market, pointing to the role of AmCham-JO in developing Jordan’s commercial and investment relations with the American side, and its achievements in partnership with various economic sectors and business owners.

AmCham-JO Chairman of Board of Directors, Mohammed Bataineh, said the United States today is Jordan’s main trading partner for its role in attracting more than 20 percent of the Kingdom’s exports, helping to provide job opportunities and transferring technology.

“The Chamber worked during the past year to support Jordanian exports in the American market and provide technical assistance to more than two hundred companies,” he said, noting that they will work this year in cooperation with local partners, the US Agency for International Development and donors to enhance Jordan’s gain from the free trade agreement, overcome economic challenges and achieve the vision of His Majesty King Abdullah II towards a prosperous Jordan.

Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Amman, Mike Hankey, said Jordan is one of the first Arab countries to sign a free trade agreement with his country, which indicates the depth and strength of the relationship between the two countries.

The volume of trade between Jordan and the United States has grown in the last two decades, as the Kingdom’s exports have increased from $73 million in 2000 to nearly $1,851 billion in 2019.
