Relatively cold weather forecast today, depression over weekend

 Relatively cold weather is expected to prevail on Thursday in most parts of the country, while it will be warm in the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said in its daily brief.

The weather will turn colder later at night with cloudy skies and a chance of light showers in the northern regions. Winds will be southwesterly moderate to brisk, blowing dust in the Badia areas, the JMD added.

The Kingdom will be affected on Friday by a cold and wet air mass accompanied by a depression centered over Cyprus, pushing thermometers down and bringing chilly and cloudy conditions with rainfall that may turn heavy accompanied by hail in some regions, causing flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas, the JMD forecast.

Snow showers are also expected on Friday around midnight and Saturday morning in mountainous areas, especially in the south, while winds will be westerly with strong gusts, stirring dust in the Badia, the department further said.

Mercury levels will continue to drop on Saturday, as chilly and cloudy conditions will continue to prevail with heavy downpours accompanied by thunder and hail at times, forming floods in valleys and low-lying areas. Light snow is also expected at times over the highlands with westerly brisk winds with powerful gusts of 80 kilometres per hour which are expected to raise dust in the Badia, the JMD added.

Daytime temperatures expected for today will reach 15 degrees Celsius in Amman, 12 in the northern cities, dropping down at night to 5. The weather will be warmer in the port city of Aqaba with highs reaching 23 and lows standing at 11, the JMD added.
