Coronavirus death toll in China rises to 1,868

The death toll from the coronavirus outbreak in mainland China reached 1,868 by the end of Monday, up by 98 from the previous day, China’s National Health Commission reported on Tuesday.

In a statement, the commission said that 31 provincial-level regions on the Chinese mainland reported 1,886 new cases of confirmed infections, pushing the new total to 72,436.

At the end of last December, the Chinese authorities had informed the World Health Organization (WHO) of a cluster of cases of pneumonia caused by the new coronavirus in Wuhan city, the center of Hubei Province, and since then the virus has spread to many countries.

For its part, the WHO pointed out that 694 new cases of coronavirus had been discovered in 25 countries other than China.
