Twenty percent of Jordan’s electricity comes from renewables

Renewables contributed about 2,063 megawatts to Jordan’s electric output in 2020, covering 20 percent of the Kingdom’s power consumption, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Hala Zawati said on Wednesday.

Energy from renewables sources is expected to cover 31 percent of the country’s power needs by 2030. In 2014, the renewables’ contribution to the total energy mix did not exceed 1 percent, the minister noted in a statement.

She further indicated that more than 24,400 renewable energy systems were installed and connected to the national grid by the end of 2020 for households, universities, places of worships and public and private institutions.

According to Zawati, the number of for-profit renewable energy projects stood at 31 with a total capacity of 1,338 megawatts, noting that some of these projects are owned by the private sector and some others are government ventures.
