Khamasini depression to affect Kingdom today

shahennews

Jordan on Tuesday will be affected by a khamasini air depression, pushing temperatures high and bringing relatively warm, dry and dusty weather conditions nationwide with cloudy skies, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said in its daily brief.

The Khamasini depression’s name is derived from khamsin (50) in Arabic, as it occurs during the 50 days from the end of March to 10th of May.

Winds will be southwesterly active with strong gusts exceeding 80km/h, blowing dust during day time and causing low visibility in the Badia areas, the JMD added.

Toward night, the depression will move to Turkey, and mercury levels will significantly dip, making cold conditions along with low-altitude clouds and a chance of intermittent rain in the northern highlands.

The weather department warned of slippery roads in the areas experiencing rain, poor visibility due to dust storms, strong winds, and of high sea waves in the Gulf city of Aqaba, urging the public, especially asthma patients and those who suffer seasonal allergy, to take precautions as the dust-laden winds pass through the Kingdom.

On Wednesday, a relatively cold and wet air mass is forecast to affect the country, pushing mercury levels down to become around seasonal average, so relatively cold and partly cloudy weather will prevail in the highlands and plains, while it will be moderate in the Jordan Valley and Aqaba, with a possibility of light rain in the northern and central regions, the JMD predicted, noting that winds will be westerly active.

On Thursday, mercury will continue to drop, marking 3-4 degrees below annual average. Therefore, it will be cold in most regions, except in the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and Aqaba where it will be fair, the JMD further said.

The forecasters predicted that clouds will build up at low altitudes and light showers will fall in the western parts of the Kingdom, while winds will be westerly moderate, picking up at times.

The highs in Amman and other highlands across the Kingdom will range between 26 and 30 degrees Celsius on Saturday, dropping to 10 at night. In the Jordan Valley and Aqaba, it will be much warmer with mercury levels in the 35 degrees Celsius vicinity.
