قال الجنرال كينيث ماكينزي قائد القيادة المركزية الأمريكية، إن بلاده ستخفض عدد قواتها في سوريا على المدى الطويل، وأن هذه العملية ستتم بحذر.
وأضاف قائد القيادة المركزية الأمريكية، في تصريح صحفي: لقد «تم تدمير داعش في سوريا، وإن دولته التي كانت واسعة أصبحت لا شيء الآن». وزعم أن «إيران تصدر الإرهاب في المنطقة والعالم، وتشكل تهديداً طويل الأمد»، وتابع قائلاً: «إننا نتواصل مع حلفائنا وأصدقائنا في المنطقة، للتأكد من أننا متحدون ضد التهديد الإيراني». وعن الوجود الأمريكي في العراق، قال الجنرال ماكينزي: إنه «واثق بأن الوجود هناك سيكون طويل الأجل، وهو يهدف إلى مكافحة الإرهاب، وأن واشنطن تساعد بغداد في بناء قدراتها المؤسساتية». كما زعم ماكينزي إلى أن ما تقوم به الولايات المتحدة في اليمن مرتبط مباشرة بالعمليات ضد «القاعدة» و»داعش».
وتولى ماكينزي في أواخر آذار الماضي مهامه رسمياً بمنصب قائد القيادة المركزية الأمريكية المشرفة على الأعمال العسكريّة للولايات المتحدة في بلدان عدة بينها سوريا وأفغانستان، خلفاً للجنرال جوزيف فوتيل الذي أحيل للتقاعد.
يشار إلى أن الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترامب، سبق أن أعلن رسمياً قرار سحب قوات بلاده من سوريا، إلا أنه عاد وقال إن الانسحاب سيتم بشكل بطيء، وأن الأمر لن يكون فوراً، بعد أن أثار جدلاً واسعا في البيت الأبيض والكونغرس، ودفع جيمس ماتيس، وزير الدفاع الأمريكي آنذاك، إلى الاستقالة.
