Jordan has affirmed the importance of supporting all efforts and initiatives aimed at achieving a Middle East free from nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.

In statement at a UN General Assembly First Committee meeting late Wednesday, Permanent Representative of Jordan to the United Nations, Mahmoud Hamoud, stressed the need to launch a comprehensive and balanced dialogue for the success of the Review Conference, which will be held in 2026, and aims at reaching a comprehensive final document that once again reflects the commitment countries of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and establishing a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.

As part of Jordan’s efforts to achieve this goal, it will continue to work at the regional and international levels to enhance disarmament diplomacy under the Non-Proliferation Treaty, the envoy indicated, noting that the Kingdom calls on all UN member states to welcome the outcomes of the conference’s first and second sessions, which were chaired by Jordan and Kuwait.

He also retreated Jordan’s calls for supporting efforts aimed at agreeing on a legal instrument binding on the region’s countries that contributes to eliminating the threat of non-conventional weapons from the region, which will bring about regional and international peace and security.

Regarding cyber security, Hamoud highlighted that Jordan supports international efforts aimed at achieving cyber security to protect nations from any attacks that would harm their interests, urging to build the developing countries’ capacities in the field of security and use of information and communications technology.
