Water ministry, GIZ inaugurate sector governance project

The Ministry of Water and Irrigation, in cooperation with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) , on Sunday, organized a workshop on Water Sector Governance Project, aimed to improving performance and addressing the sector’s various challenges.

Addressing the event, the ministry’s Secretary-General, Jihad Mahamid, said Jordan suffers from water scarcity which “is much less than the international water poverty line.”

Mahamid added that the pressure is increasing on the Kingdom’s available water resources, due to the population increase, the large number of Syrian refugees and effects of climate change, which contributed to declining water resources, triggered by increasing use and depleting groundwater resources that led to a “clear decline in the per capita share.”

For his part, Acting Secretary-General of Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ), Rami Abu Rawaq, said the authority is looking forward to benefiting from expertise and modern technologies in all water sector institutions, to achieve the goals and aspirations of the sector’s strategic plans, achieve sustainable development, build capabilities, and extend technical support, and realize “effective” institutional development of services provided to reach “advanced” levels to reduce the citizens’ burdens and improve supply efficiency in all regions.

Meanwhile, Director of GIZ Water Projects,, Trevor Surig, said the project will support, during the next four years, the long-term planning of Jordan’s water sector institutions in addressing multiple issues, primarily resource availability, demand fluctuations and optimal resource allocation.

Surig added that the project also to supporting water sector institutions in implementing good governance principles.

On the project’s main objectives, he said its activities seek to improve dialogue among water sector institutions, support their performance monitoring, strengthen human resource management, and improve central water management.

The project, he noted, focuses on digitization and data security issue and efforts to expand this drive nationally to improve services level to spare reduce time and effort.
