Poll: Gov’t can perform job after 100 days in office

A poll to gauge government performance after 100 days in office showed that 49 percent of a national sample and 58 percent of an opinion leaders sample believe that Prime Minister Omar Razzaz’s government was able to shoulder its duties in the previous stage.

The survey, conducted by the Center for Strategic Studies at the University of Jordan, indicated that the national sample saw the most pressing issues that need to be addressed promptly were: unemployment, 23 percent, rising prices and cost of living, 21 percent, the general economic situation, 12 percent, and poverty and corruption 14 percent each.

According to the survey, whose results were announced by the center’s director, Musa Shteiwi, at a press conference yesterday, 47 per cent of the sample of opinion leaders held the view that the economic situation in general is the most important problem facing Jordan, then corruption, by 12 percent, while the income tax and government weakness and performance came in varying percentages.

The poll revealed that 30% of the national sample believed that things in Jordan are moving in the right direction, while 34% of the opinion leaders sample said that things are going in the right direction.

Meantime, 42% of the national sample said that the government was able to shoulder the responsibilities of the previous stage, while 45% of the opinion leaders saw that the government was up for the task.

As for the makeup of the cabinet, 29% of the national sample said that the ministerial team was able to bear its responsibilities, while 32% of the opinion leaders said that it was up to the task, according to the survey.

The poll revealed that 40 per cent of the respondents in the national sample and 44 percent in the opinion leaders sample were with a broad cabinet reshuffle, while 18 percent of the national sample respondents and 16 percent of the opinion leaders sample supported a limited cabinet reshuffle, and that 30 per cent of the respondents in the national sample and 31 per cent in the opinion leaders sample did not support a cabinet shakeup.

On the economic situation in Jordan today, compared to the past 12 months, only 10% of the national sample and 8% of the opinion leaders sample said that it is getting better.
