PM inaugurates new emergency ward at Al-Bashir Hospital

Prime Minister Omar Razzaz said Monday that improving the health sector is a top government priority and pledged to upgrade services at the Al Bashir Hospital and the other government health facilities across the Kingdom.

He spoke at a ceremony to unveil the memorial plaque of a new 147-bed ambulance and emergency ward of Al-Bashir Hospital, which is built at a cost of JD16 million (23 million US dollars).

The four-storey emergency ward, funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in cooperation with the Ministries of Health and Public Works and Housing, was built on an area of 20,000 square meters.

During the inauguration ceremony, which was attended by ministers, lawmakers, and USAID officials, Razzaz said that the new ward would enhance services at the Al Bashir Hospital, which offers healthcare to about 50,000 people in the capital every month.

Razzaz announced that he will make periodic visits to Al-Bashir Hospital, to ensure that it will become an iconic government health facility in the Kingdom, adding that the public will be updated about efforts to raise the level of health service.

Public Works and Housing minister Falah Al-Amoush pointed to the expertise of Jordanian engineers and contractors in the design, supervision and implementation of the project in a partnership with the US side to achieve quality health service.

Health Minister Ghazi Al-Zabin said that the project is of utmost importance as the hospital will meet an urgent need in facing the large and growing number of patients and to further upgrade and regulate services according to best international standards that positively affects both staff and patients.

Kerry Pelzman, USAID Deputy Director, said that the agency’s funding of the project, which will help elevate the quality of service provided to citizens and residents in the Kingdom, is part of the strong partnership between the United States and Jordan.
