Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday made his first visit to Wuhan city, hit hardest by the new coronavirus epidemic, since the first cases of the then-unidentified respiratory illness emerged in December.

The President’s visit came to inspect new coronavirus control efforts, and visit medical workers, community volunteers, patients and others on the front lines, according to state news broadcasters.

Xi’s visit to Wuhan comes as the number of new confirmed cases, mostly in the city or other parts of the surrounding Hubei province, has dwindled to below 50 a day.

Globally, more than 113,000 people have been infected with the virus, of which more than 3,800 have died, while about 62,000 people have already recovered.
