Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi and United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen discussed over the phone Wednesday the latest development on the Syrian crisis and effort exerted to find a political solution to it.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry, Safadi reiterated the Kingdom’s support for a political solution to the Syrian crisis in a manner that would guarantee the territorial integrity, security and stability of the Syrian Republic. A solution should allow the voluntary return of refugees.

Safadi emphasized the need of building on the positive impetus induced by the outcome of the Constitutional Committee’s meeting as an “important step” toward the desired political solution.

He underlined the necessity of providing medical and humanitarian assistance to help stabilize Syria especially that the country suffers from the economic, social and health ramifications of the coronavirus pandemic.

In turn, Pedersen highlighted the UN’s continued effort to help start a new round of Constitutional Committee talks as well as work with all concerned parties to move forward with effort aimed at politically settling the crisis.

The top diplomats agreed to continue coordination and cooperation on the Syrian crisis and means to provide support to more than 1.3 million Syrians in the Kingdom.
