‘COVID-19 situation reassuring in Jordan, but should not give false sense of safety’: expert

An infectious disease consultant, Dirar Balawi, confirmed Thursday that the epidemiological situation in Jordan is “reassuring,” however, he stressed that this reassurance should not give a false sense of safety.

During his participation in Roya’s Donya Ya Donya program, Balawi warned of laxity, and failure to adhere to the set health protocols after individuals take a coronavirus jab.

Balawi said coronavirus vaccines alone cannot protect against the virus due to the presence of strain mutations, which can result in repercussions. This may occur as a result of a lack of commitment to preventive measures.

He added that the virus mutations are not frightening, but everyone must remain cautious, as they are more transmissible and reduce the effectiveness of vaccines.

Balawi called for accelerating the pace of the national vaccination campaign in Jordan, so that “we do not give the virus a chance to spread and increase its mutations.”

Additionally, the expert noted that there are more than two million people registered on the Ministry of Health COVID-19 vaccination platform, more than one million people received the first dose, and around 400,000 people received both doses.

Balawi expressed his hope that by the beginning of July, more than two million people would have received the vaccine.

Tuesday, 19 coronavirus-related deaths and 1,174 new cases were recorded in the Kingdom, which brings the total number of deaths and infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 9,295 and 726,432, respectively.
